About Celje

Paved Roman Street, a rare early Christian baptistery, the mighty Old Castle of Celje and princely mansion (the former princely palace Celje), also the city church and the restored medieval walls bear witness to the former power and glory of the "other Troy".

Just a short walk around the town will reveal unobtrusive architectural jewels from the second, subsequent periods. The old county, which houses the Regional Museum, also represents one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Slovenia.

Classicist architecture illustrates the Old Town Hall, which for several decades works as the Museum of Contemporary History.

Many different historical styles can be found in Celje, manly from the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century: from the wonderful neo-Renaissance National house, to the impressive neogothic German house, which is today the Celje house.

Younger, of course, are the masterful creations of the famous architect Jože Plečnik, especially the beautiful building of the former People's Savings Bank on the corner of Vodnikova and Stanetova streets.

The rich history of Celje is best portrayed in both urban museums. Collections of the Regional Museum represent the history of Celje and its surroundings from the Paleolithic to 20 century and experts believe it to be among the best in Slovenia, what is more, the famous Celje ceiling in the main hall of the county is even the most important monument of art during the Renaissance and Baroque on our soil.

The history of Celje in the 20th century represents the Museum of History,  and the Pelicans photography studio, a unique place in Central Europe.

Live visual arts are displayed in the gallery of contemporary art, which is situated in the renovated wing of the Ducal Court.

For all the lovers of nature, good weather and fresh air, there is a great relaxing walk around the Šmartinsko Lake. Cycling and walking paths, start at the church of St. John and lead you to the lake.

Along the way you can find many wooden benches, on which you can relax, while a walk around the lake will offer you a lot of interesting information about the lake and the life in it, so stop at the information board and learn something new.
